Melanie: Ah, thank you. I'd be curious if you've read "THE MORAL PREMISE" or, else, how you arrived at the conclusions in this fine essay. I'm encouraged. And, I'll have to dig out my copy of Dramatica and take another look at how it suggests authors take this united approach to the natural law of story telling. Best regards.

“it is a reevaluation of the meaning of what has occurred that can lead to changing one’s understanding of what is happening in the present or will eventually happen in the future.“

Ye! Right on the mark. This is what the story I am writing now is all about. But redemption; what about redemption?

Hi, Pete. When it comes to propaganda and heavy messages it is a matter of storytelling, not story structure. As such, there is no "logical" way to avoid it. No matter how well one can structure a story mechanically, there is a point at which an author must rely on instinct in order to connect with the reader or audience.

This helps clear up a lot of confusion on what role structure plays. I would like to hear what Ms. Philips has to say about stories that become too heavily laden with message, or so polemical and propagandistic that they get in the way of the story. How does one strike a balance?

Even as I strongly feel on positively commenting on this space it takes me a while to figure what and how to write, and my chest feels up with this heaviness and my mind with this frustration if at all i should write.
But i try to overcome this feeling and here i keep writing.
Am not a trained writer but i have found writing to be very therapeutic but i have always had trouble kick start any piece of my writing. I may have all these thoughts stories poems running in my head may be all night be it reflective, social creative or practical and feel this urge of just penning it down but for some reason i fail to gather the energy to write it then, and when i try to write there is like this vacuum in my mind. This adds to my frustration and i just give up.
I have been following up on lessons in dramatica and have found it very insightful but for some reason I always have wondered if I can write at all.
I guess its getting too long a story, so to cut it short, I am a medical graduate who decided to do a one year Post Grad Diploma in film making, and I always felt that a good film needs a good story the writing of which has always been very challenging to me.
Many times i get disappointed that "I cant write" and many a times i lack direction. Too many thoughts that I cant decide what to pen and what not to and how.
But reading this article gave me a lot of encouragement that am not alone feeling that way, may be it is about the WHEN and not the WHERE, may be these cycles are there and that surely makes quite some sense.
You doing a great job Anne Philips and when some day am ready I would like to order those Dramatica series.

This is my blog stallionkhan.blogspot.com, if you do get time from your busy schedule do drop by and drop your comments. I will be grateful.

           Thanks,

           Khan.

As an illustrator, I can vouch for the above comments - there really are certain times of the day that are easier to create in! :-)
